BIG — Bjarke Ingels Group, released its plans for Oceanix City which is a floating city concept. The idea is geared to be a solution to a potential future housing crisis that is motivated by extreme weather events. Addressing the alarming concern of climate change, and especially rising sea levels, BIG falls under the category of many architectural practices that are looking to prepare for the future.
The floating city concept consists of clusters of buoyant islands. Each group will have six, semi-dependent lands. The six can be combined to form a 12-hectare village which will be able to house about 1,650 residents. This village can be added onto to eventually reach an “archipelago home” and by the estimation of the Bjarke Ingels Group, this formation can house about 10,000 citizens.
